About Morpho
Morpho began in 2022 as an optimisation layer sitting on top of Aave and Compound, matching lenders and borrowers peer-to-peer to narrow the interest-rate spread, and later shipped Morpho Blue, a minimal immutable lending primitive on which anyone can create isolated markets by choosing a collateral asset, loan asset, oracle and liquidation parameter. Curated vaults built on top allocate deposits across those markets on depositors' behalf. It is deployed on Ethereum and Base among other networks. MORPHO is a governance token for the Morpho DAO; it does not itself accrue protocol interest, and voting power is what it confers.
The token was distributed before it could be moved: transferability was disabled at first, and the DAO only enabled it in November 2024, alongside a wrapper contract that converts legacy MORPHO one-to-one into a wrapped version with on-chain vote accounting, since only the wrapped token is transferable. Traders should treat the token's float as expanding, because DAO allocations, contributor and investor tranches vest over multiple years. Price behaviour has tracked DeFi lending activity, Base ecosystem growth and total value locked more than general layer-1 beta, and lending protocols carry tail risk from oracle failures and bad-debt events in individual isolated markets.
