About Decred
Decred launched in February 2016 without an ICO, built by developers associated with the btcsuite Bitcoin implementation and funded by the founding organization itself. Its defining feature is a hybrid consensus system: miners produce blocks under proof-of-work, but stakeholders lock DCR to buy tickets that are randomly called to vote on those blocks and on consensus rule changes, so no upgrade activates without stakeholder approval. A portion of every block subsidy funds an on-chain treasury, spent through the Politeia proposal system, making the project self-funding rather than dependent on outside grants.
Supply is capped near 21 million, but unlike Bitcoin the block subsidy declines by a small percentage roughly every three weeks, producing a smooth emission curve with no halving events and therefore none of the halving-cycle narrative that drives Bitcoin-linked flows. A significant share of supply is typically locked in voting tickets at any time, reducing liquid float. Liquidity is thin relative to large caps, so spreads widen quickly in stress, and exchange delisting or reduced market-making support is a real structural risk for assets in this tier.
