About Optimism
Ethereum scaling through optimistic rollups is the remit of Optimism, whose mainnet opened in 2021 and whose OP Stack codebase now underpins many other chains, including Coinbase's Base, collectively marketed as the Superchain. Transactions execute off-chain and are posted to Ethereum, with a fraud-proof window governing withdrawals. Governance is split between a Token House of OP holders and a Citizens' House allocating retroactive public-goods funding. OP is a governance token: it votes on upgrades and grants and funds ecosystem incentives, but it is not the gas token, since fees on the network are paid in ETH.
OP's supply profile is the dominant technical consideration. A large total supply was allocated across ecosystem funds, airdrops, investors and core contributors, with multi-year vesting that produced regular, sizeable monthly unlocks and repeated airdrop distributions, keeping circulating supply on a persistent upward path. Revenue accrues to the Optimism Collective through chains built on the OP Stack sharing sequencer income, but that income fell sharply after Ethereum's Dencun upgrade cut data costs and, in turn, the fees rollups can charge. Price is tightly correlated with ETH and with the rival layer-2 basket, and unlock calendars have historically been a visible short-term driver.
