About Gnosis
Starting life in 2017 as a prediction-market platform, Gnosis evolved into a broad ecosystem governed by GnosisDAO, which incubated the Safe smart-account wallet, CoW Protocol's batch-auction exchange, and Gnosis Chain, an Ethereum-aligned proof-of-stake network formed by absorbing the xDai sidechain in 2021. Safe and CoW were later spun out with their own tokens and governance, leaving GNO focused on the chain and the DAO's treasury. GNO is the staking asset for Gnosis Chain validators, who bond a small fixed amount per validator rather than the much larger requirement on Ethereum, and it carries governance rights within GnosisDAO.
GNO has an unusually small supply, reduced from its original ten million maximum toward a three million target through governance-approved burns, so per-token price levels are not comparable with high-supply peers and the redenomination history distorts long-range charts. A second peculiarity is that the DAO holds a large treasury relative to the token's market value, which has periodically led holders and activists to trade GNO with reference to that backing and to push redemption or buyback proposals, producing moves driven by governance votes rather than crypto beta. The spinouts of Safe and CoW also removed narratives that once supported GNO, and liquidity remains thinner than for comparably sized tokens.
