About Maple Finance
Maple Finance began in 2019 as an on-chain institutional credit marketplace, arranging overcollateralized and undercollateralized loans to trading firms and institutions through pools managed by credit underwriters, with lenders supplying stablecoins for yield. Its consumer-facing product, Syrup, opens a version of that lending yield to a wider set of depositors via syrupUSDC. The SYRUP token replaced the earlier MPL token in a conversion approved by governance and launched in November 2024, at a ratio of one MPL to one hundred SYRUP. SYRUP is the governance asset for the protocol.
The token migration is the key discontinuity in SYRUP's data: supply figures and per-token prices before and after the conversion are on different scales, and the conversion window closed permanently in 2025, so any unmigrated MPL is stranded. Because Maple's business is lending to trading firms, the protocol's revenue and the token's narrative are procyclical — loan demand rises in active markets and falls in quiet ones, and the sector carries genuine credit risk, as Maple demonstrated with borrower defaults during the 2022 downturn.
