About Sui
Sui is a layer-1 network launched in May 2023 by Mysten Labs, a team formed by engineers who had worked on Meta's abandoned Diem and Novi projects. It uses the Move programming language and an object-centric data model in which simple transfers can bypass full consensus and be finalized in parallel, while contested transactions pass through its DAG-based consensus, later upgraded to Mysticeti. The design targets latency and throughput for consumer applications and games. SUI pays gas, is delegated to validators under a delegated proof-of-stake system, secures storage through a storage fund, and carries on-chain governance weight.
Supply is capped at ten billion tokens, with only a small share circulating at launch and a multi-year vesting schedule covering early contributors, investors and community reserves. That schedule is the defining feature for traders: monthly unlocks have repeatedly added meaningful percentages to float, and unlock calendars have coincided with periods of underperformance. Volatility has been considerably higher than Bitcoin's, and SUI has traded as part of the high-beta 'alternative layer-1' basket, moving with SOL and other new smart-contract chains more closely than with BTC.
