About Shiba Inu
Created in August 2020 by an anonymous person using the name Ryoshi, Shiba Inu is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum with no underlying product at launch and an explicitly meme-driven origin. Half the initial one-quadrillion supply was sent unsolicited to Vitalik Buterin, who burned most of it and donated the rest — an event that permanently removed a large share of tokens. The project later added its own decentralized exchange, the companion tokens LEASH and BONE, and Shibarium, an Ethereum layer-2 network on which BONE rather than SHIB serves as the gas asset.
SHIB remains, in trading terms, a memecoin: its price is driven by retail attention, exchange listings and social momentum rather than revenue or usage metrics. The supply is enormous and quoted in fractions of a cent, which magnifies percentage moves and makes the unit price psychologically important to holders. Drawdowns have been severe and prolonged after speculative peaks, most notably following the October 2021 top. Community burn campaigns retire tokens but at rates far too small to matter against the outstanding float. SHIB typically leads on the way up and lags badly on the way down relative to Bitcoin, behaving as a late-cycle risk proxy.
