About Hedera
Hedera is a public network that went live in 2019 and uses the hashgraph consensus algorithm invented by Leemon Baird, rather than a conventional blockchain data structure. Governance is deliberately unusual: the network is overseen by a council of large organizations, each running a consensus node, with membership terms designed to rotate. The design targets high throughput with predictable, very low fees denominated in fiat terms, and offers native services for token issuance, consensus timestamping and smart contracts. HBAR pays transaction and service fees, is staked to nodes for rewards, and secures the network; enterprise supply-chain, audit-logging and tokenization use cases have been the project's main commercial pitch.
HBAR has a fixed maximum supply of 50 billion, but a large portion was held by the treasury at launch and released over a multi-year schedule, so circulating supply expanded steadily for years and treasury distribution has been a persistent point of scrutiny. The network has also seen an operational incident: in March 2023 the mainnet was paused after an exploit targeting the smart contract service, with the team halting the network to patch it. Price action tends to be driven by council and enterprise announcements and by broad altcoin beta rather than by on-chain fee revenue, which remains small relative to market capitalization.
