About BNB
BNB began in 2017 as an ERC-20 token sold in Binance's ICO to fund the exchange, and later moved onto Binance's own infrastructure. It is now the native asset of BNB Chain, which pairs a proof-of-staked-authority execution chain with a small, permissioned-by-stake validator set chosen through on-chain elections. The design deliberately trades validator decentralization for cheap, fast blocks, which made the chain a home for retail DeFi and memecoin activity. The token pays gas on BNB Smart Chain, is bonded by validators and delegators for staking rewards, is used for governance voting, and historically granted trading-fee discounts on the exchange.
Supply is deflationary by policy: a quarterly auto-burn formula destroys tokens based on chain activity and price, targeting an eventual reduction of the original one hundred million cap, and a portion of gas fees is burned in real time. That makes emissions the opposite of most large caps. Traders should understand that the token behaves as much like an equity proxy for Binance as like a chain token — its drawdowns have clustered around exchange-specific news, including the 2023 US Department of Justice and CFTC actions that ended in a guilty plea and the founder's departure as CEO. Cross-chain bridge risk is also part of its history, after the 2022 BNB Bridge exploit forced a temporary chain halt.
