About EigenCloud (prev. EigenLayer)
Restaking is the idea EigenCloud, formerly EigenLayer, introduced: staked ETH and liquid staking tokens can be opted into securing additional services, letting new networks rent Ethereum's economic security instead of bootstrapping their own validator set. Built by Eigen Labs and live on Ethereum mainnet from 2024, it coordinates operators, delegated stake and slashing conditions for services such as EigenDA, its data-availability layer. The 2025 rebrand to EigenCloud reframed the project around verifiable off-chain compute and dispute resolution rather than restaking alone. EIGEN is a staking and governance asset with a distinctive intersubjective forking design intended to slash operators for faults that cannot be proven on-chain.
The token was airdropped in a non-transferable form first and only became tradable at the end of 2024, so its price history is short and began with a large claimable float. Supply is not capped — the design includes ongoing programmatic inflation — and early contributor and investor allocations, which together were the majority of the initial distribution, unlock across a multi-year schedule, making dilution a persistent feature rather than an event.
