Built on BNB Chain in September 2020 by an anonymous team, PancakeSwap is an automated market maker that grew into a multi-product exchange with concentrated liquidity pools, perpetuals, prediction markets and token launches, later expanding to Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum and other networks. It filled the demand for low-fee trading during periods when Ethereum gas costs priced out smaller users. CAKE is used for governance voting, for staking in yield pools and lotteries, and in the vote-escrow model where locking CAKE grants boosted rewards and influence over which pools receive emissions.
CAKE's defining trait as an asset is its emission history: it launched with aggressive, effectively uncapped inflation to bootstrap liquidity, and governance has since imposed a hard supply cap and repeated cuts to block emissions alongside regular burns, moving the token toward or into net deflation. Traders should therefore treat historical price series as reflecting very different tokenomics regimes rather than one continuous asset. Price behaviour correlates closely with BNB and with BNB Chain trading volume, especially retail-driven meme-token activity, since fee revenue and burn rates scale with turnover.
