About Axie Infinity
Sky Mavis, a Vietnamese studio founded by Trung Nguyen, released Axie Infinity in 2018, a creature-battling game whose characters are non-fungible tokens and which popularised the play-to-earn model, drawing very large player numbers in the Philippines and elsewhere during 2021. To escape Ethereum fees the team built Ronin, its own sidechain. The economy uses two tokens: Smooth Love Potion, earned in gameplay and spent on breeding, and AXS, which is the governance and staking asset used for treasury votes, marketplace fees and access to certain game features.
Two structural events dominate its history. In March 2022 the Ronin bridge was drained of roughly six hundred million dollars in what remains one of the largest crypto thefts, later attributed by US authorities to the North Korea-linked Lazarus Group; Sky Mavis reimbursed users and rebuilt validation. Separately, the play-to-earn economy proved to be dependent on new player inflows to fund existing player earnings, and when growth stalled the in-game token collapsed and daily active users fell sharply. AXS also carried large team and investor unlock tranches that ran for years after launch. It now trades as a gaming-sector proxy with pronounced sensitivity to that narrative.
